Hungry by Crystal Marie
Today I was greeted
by an orange beaked visitor
in my backyard.
Its feathers of light grey.
Its belly soft white.
Black eyed, it pecked
between the blades of grass
and I watched for a moment
mesmerized by its beauty,
but then I turned away
to retrieve the eggs
and the butter,
knowing even before I turned back
that my friend would
not be there anymore.
Hunger drove me to break my gaze,
just as I knew it drove
the little bird in its
search for what would nourish and sustain.
It made me think of how
we are each driven by a type of hunger
and how easily it will cause us
to break our gaze
from what it is that we most need
when it is the world that teaches us
what we ought to hunger for.
