Konjac (or konnyaku) powder, when mixed into a clear paste, has been used for centuries to strengthen paper and create beautiful, rich, and tactile textures.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make Konjac glue and explore its use as a versatile medium for collage and mixed media techniques.

Uses for Konjac glue presented in this workshop include:

✔️ Strengthening agent for paper
✔️ Thickening agent for inks
✔️ Stiffening agent for paper and textiles
✔️ Bonding agent/adhesive for collage and mixed media

With Konjac glue and a variety of materials on hand, your collage designs can become a play between translucent light layers and opaque forms. Whether textured or smooth, the combinations are as endless and varied as your imagination.

We’ll review a wide range of materials suitable for our projects—from traditional long-grain mulberry papers, prints, to magazine pages, junk mail, vintage ephemera, and both new and salvaged textiles.

Techniques Covered in this workshop:

✔️ Creating, using, and storing Konjac Glue
✔️ A review of a variety of papers, salvaged materials, and textiles suitable for use
✔️ Applications for use in creating interesting textures, patterns, and marks on paper
✔️ Stiffening, staining, and shaping textiles
✔️ Composing collage works on a variety of substrates
✔️ Developing translucent and opaque layers in collage
✔️ Displaying finished works.
