Rust + Alchemy: Symbolism and Meaning in Mark-Making

Mark-making has long been one of my favorite ways to reconnect with creative flow. It’s a kind of alchemy — a language of gestures, scratches, stains, and smudges that speak from a place beyond words. But have you ever done it with rust?

In this two-part live workshop, we’ll explore the alchemy of working with rust, alongside ink, paint, and graphite as both expression and inquiry. We’ll draw inspiration from master artists like Cy Twombly and Hannelore Barron, and look to the visual poetry of written languages—from Chinese calligraphy to Hebrew and Greek scripts—to study how emotion, rhythm, and meaning live within a single line.

Through guided exercises, you’ll begin to develop your own visual language—a personal vocabulary of marks, symbols, and gestures that can evolve into powerful sources for collage and mixed media inspiration.

If you’re ready to loosen up, experiment, and reconnect with your materials in a more intuitive way, this workshop is for you.
