It’s Halloween and spooky season is upon us. Witches and goblins are out and about, knocking on doors, and asking for treats. As children we feared such things as Zombies and Ghosts, and that one old house way up high on the hill, but now that we’re grown, we have a more mature perspective.
At least, that is, when it comes to what goes on outside of the studio.
Throughout the 37-day Sweet Days of September series of daily videos and posts on the Recovering Your Intuitive voice blog, we discussed some of the most prevailing inner-critic messages—the Perfectionist, the Black & White thinker, and the Comparison trap to name a few.
As varied as the reasons for our inner critic messages may be, there is a common denominator running through them all—they each have a foundation grounded in fear.
What ghost is haunting your own art practice? You don’t have to be consciously aware that these old messages are holding you back, so deeply ingrained in the psyche they may be.
Don’t feel qualified to call yourself an artist? Feel like the time you spend creating is a frivolous waste? Can’t show your work until you know that it’s perfect? Or maybe, like me, you’ve received one too many rejections from recent submissions?
We are no longer children, fearing things that go bump in the night, yet just like the boogeyman of our childhood imagination, the false-beliefs that make up our critic messages will grow in the dark.
We don’t need to perform an exorcism or recite an elaborate incantation to dispel these demons. And hiding under the covers isn’t an effective solution.
Instead, we can shine a light on them, face them down, and—most importantly—do it together. The truth is, like any ghost story, the power of our inner critic voice lies in secrecy and isolation. But what if instead of facing these shadows alone, you had a community of fellow artists who understood?
In my Recovering Your Intuitive Voice membership group, you’ll find the support and creative mentorship among a community of peers. We meet monthly in a casual, authentic, and welcoming hangout to discuss the obstacles and victories in our practices.
Group members also enjoy twice monthly prerecorded lessons from some of my most popular workshops, exclusive blog posts on recovering your own authentic voice as an artist, journal prompts, and other perks.
So, if you’re ready to leave behind the ghosts of perfectionism, comparison, and self-doubt, why not join us?
